Keep in mind that you don't have to use the Mac.com SMTP server if you don't want to. It's generally more efficient to use the SMTP server belonging to the ISP to which you are connected, as opposed to stretching half-way across the Internet. Unfortunately, some ISPs have brain-dead policies about what you can pipe through their SMTP server.
