EarthLink is in no way blocking mac.com email. In fact, EarthLink accounts created on new Apple machines via setup assistant (or when registering Mac OS X) get a mac.com email address, but get EarthLink as their access provider. That being the case why would EarthLink block the mac.com SMTP server? That just wouldn't make sense.
Are you using smtp.earthlink.net as the SMTP server or mail.earthlink.net? The preferred server to use is smtp.earthlink.net.
