Like security in office, the identities function is not designed as a substitute for a multi-user operating system. It is designed as a light weight method for (usually one person) to operate in different environments - maybe you have a non-work identity for e-mail. You switch into it, get that mail, act on it, then switch back to your normal identity. If you have two truly different users (you and your wife), then switch on the multi user system. In OS-X it is always on, and I would suggest moving to X. Now all you need to do it cmd-shift-Q and in about 10 seconds you will be in your own system, with all your own dock settings, app prefs, last used docs, files, etc. You can still share apps with your wife by making sure that you each install shared stuff in the Applications and Library folders at the same level as the Users folder. All users have access to these apps and library items (screen savers and such). But still with your own local prefs. This is a bit of a fag for single users like myself, but in your environment it will be a real boon. Try it: I bet you like it very much.
