Good points Dan. Since you are just using Mac OS supplied libraries for the
API to the Internet Config settings, it looks like there may likely be an OS
problem. That is assuming there was correct data in this thread earlier
where an individual had to shut Entourage down before closing IE to make
sure that the IE prefs got saved.

I figured that the identities issue would be complex and the sharing of data
in the database is usually great. To give you a little insight into the
operational environment we have at my house (and maybe many others) I offer
the following.

We have one Mac that all of the family members use. Each has their own
identity for Entourage purposes. (We have not found any need to use the
multi-user capability offered by the OS yet.) Try as I might, I have not
succeeded in getting the other family members to quit application when they
are done (they think that closing the main window does the trick -- at least
I have been able to remove the close box from the Entourage main window). So
I often find multiple Office applications running in the background when I
go to switch identities to view my mail. The usual sign is that the
identity switcher window does not come up when I start entourage. But of
course I then have to shut it down again and go quit all the apps running in
the background before I can restart.

I occasionally run into problems from the other side also: I am creating a
document in Word and decide to grab some information from my contacts
database. However my wife was the last one to use Entourage so it is her
identity that is active. So I have to save my document, quit Word, start
Entourage, switch identities, quit Entourage, restart Word, open my
document, and then get the information I wanted. Going to our paper address
book and retyping is often easier.

So as you can see, although we are multi-user, we are sequential multi-user
not parallel and each user does little or no multi-tasking. So the
safeguards built into the identity switching mechanism do not apply to most
of what we do. Maybe the architecture could be extended without a lot of
trouble to have a shared contact list for environments like mine. Of course
I'm sure somebody else will then ask for a shared calendar too. It might be
like opening Pandora's box. :-)

Thanks for the great Office Suite on the Macintosh. With the voices I hear
on this list, you will never run out of ideas for future enhancement.

   Jim
