Yes, I see that I imagine that MS would probably take into account what
would be most straightforward for people using Word as a standalone word
processor. I.e. they would probably prefer not to displease people using
Word and Entourage exactly as advised in the ReadMe and Help. Probably, with
Office 2001, they were getting users saying "Well, I'm using Word exactly
how MS recommends, and Entourage is part of the same Office suite - why
doesn't it just work right Why should _I_ have to do the extra work when I'm
using the apps in recommended fashion?" If I were MS, that would carry some
weight with me.

On the other hand, people in the publishing business who are using Word as a
preparation for a non-MS product, like Quark, which is going to be setting
styles, fonts, etc. might be expected to have to take an extra step for
inter-application use, if their use differs from standalone use. That seems
reasonable to me. I would say _especially_ experts in the publishing
business - they surely have learned to do much more complicated things than
this with text. If you're using Word as a plain text editor, because you
have a more specialized app to come later, you're not exactly using it as it
was designed. Of course, it will work as a simple text editor - but there
are lots of those, and much cheaper too, around. I know a lot of people use
BBEdit in conjunction with Quark. maybe that would suit you better than
Word?

But they didn't design it for you specifically, did they? If there's a
conflict between a specialized publishing expert porting documents to Quark
and people using Word as a sophisticated word processor, or which purpose
they paid a lot of money the manufacturer will naturally decide in favor of
the latter.

I'm glad. I find it pretty cool myself.
