Well I am coming to this thread late (and may have missed some), but if you are not applying text styles, etc. anyway why send it in an HMTL mail? (Which is the only time you have this problem with pasting and the additional lines, correct? Or did I miss an email?) For Ian's situation I would imagine a plain text email is the best solution, so just turn off HTML to begin with.
