Yes, if notifications is On - it will actually start running if ANY office
programme is opened - and is almost certainly listed in the login items
window to start up automatically when you log in.

No, not is notification is on.

The script is the easiest way. You could turn notifications off in the
entourage menu, delete the daemon from login items & re-login etc, but it's
a lot easier to just run the script.
