Not quite true. For instance, my flat panel iMac, which is quite new, needs
the crossover cable. There's a knowledge base article about which computers
need which cable:

I have routinely hooked up via Ethernet cable to several different Macs.
Often, you can use AppleTalk instead of the IP address route, especially if
you don't have Ethernet setup. On OS 9, use the Chooser to select AppleTalk;
in OS X, the Finder's Go menu, Connect to Server, will list AppleTalk
connections available. Stuff transfers very fast.
