I did a quick test. When I intentionally changed a file after the scan and
before the backup, Retrospect did not complain at all. After the backup,
during the "compare" phase, Retrospect also did not complain about the file
I intentionally modified.

I also reviewed Retrospect's "Operations Log" and found that virtually every
night, Retrospect complains of a "different modification data/time" between
the time the database was backed up, and the time it the second pass
"compared" the backup against the source file.

NOTE: This does not necessarily mean the file was improperly backed up!!! It
simply means the file had changed in some way between the backup and the
compare. In fact, I was able to restore from this file and had no problems
using the resulting Entourage database.

Retrospect has the ability to detect open or locked files, and report that
error, although I have not seen it:

During the compare phase, Retrospect also sometimes reports that a file has
a different size. This happens to me with things like system.log, but I have
never seen it with the Entourage database.

One thing I like about Retrospect is that, while I can restore my drive to
essentially its state as of the last backup, I can also choose to restore
multiple copies of a given file (e.g. The Entourage database) that were
saved at different times. That way, if I discover a problem with the
"latest" copy of a file, I can drop back to the previous day's backup and
try that version.

By the way, I'm running Retrospect 5.0.205 (workgroup edition), and
Entourage v.X Service Release 1 (10.1.0). For what it's worth, Retrospect is
running on an OS 9 "server", and backing up (among other things) this OS X
"client" which includes my Entourage database.

Enjoy!
