If data has been flushed, the compare will fail. Therefore, you have a problem.
I really do not understand what you are thinking. You are apparently asking how to tell if you have a problem. I have answered that question repeatedly. You apparently seem to think a backup should always succeed, no matter what the circumstances. That simply does not happen in the real world. Files get opened and changed. Backup media has glitches. Things happen. Retrospect has some of the best reporting and handling of these and other types of problems that I have seen (and I have seen a lot of them). Now, usually, a data inconsistency error will affect one or a few files. Normally, the easiest solution to this problem is to simply rerun the backup after closing whatever application is updating the file. In the case we are discussing, quitting Entourage is usually sufficient. If you have repeated problems, you can follow the other recommendations here, such as starting with no background tasks or mounting the drive as a target disk on another computer. If you wish to talk about large transactional databases that are constantly updated, I'll refer you to Oracle - that type of database is rather different than a simple mail system database, and does require solutions dedicated to backing up that type of database. However, that is another mailing list. -- Eric Hildum > From: Thomas Schierle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Reply-To: "Entourage:mac Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 12:52:36 +0200 > To: Entourage Talk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: Do backup/sync programs fail on Entourage DB (?) > > On 2002-07-12 02:34 +0200, Eric Hildum wrote: > >> [ ... ] >> In the case we were discussing, backing up an Entourage database, you will >> know if you have an issue as I described. > > How would I know? -- A compare of cause is useless, as it will > always fail if data is flushed to disk while the backup is in progress. -- To unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> archives: <http://www.mail-archive.com/entourage-talk%40lists.letterrip.com/> old-archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/entourage-talk%40lists.boingo.com/>
