Apple clearly indicates what is a minimum and what is a recommended
installation. You chose to run minimum, so you should expect low
performance. You would have the same issue on any upgrade in Windows; worse
actually, as usually a Windows upgrade requires a processor upgrade as well
as memory increases.

As for the transparency effects, I find it very helpful to be able to see
underlying windows while I work. I do not need as much mouse motion to see
the information I need to get things done. So I am glad they did it. And
yes, I did spring for a little extra memory - $50 isn't an issue considering
the significant benefits of upgrading to OS X.

No one is forcing you to upgrade.
