Entourage uses a database. There are pros and cons on the the two different methods and I'm sure other will chime in here with their opinions. You only have to restart Entourage and not your computer. First line of defense for any application is to make regular backups. I suggest creating a task in Entourage to remind you to backup your Identity every X days. I do this every 3 days and leave mail on server for 3 days so I am covered. The problem of having to rebuild might seem more prevalent than it actually is. You don't hear from the hundreds of people that don't have a problem, just the ones that do. Rebuilding is not a maintenance procedure. Do it only when needed. You should rebuild the database if you have problems starting Entourage or viewing, opening, and storing items or need to reclaim disk space. The database will be left with 'wasted' space in it every time you delete something. However, this is not all bad, since the wasted space is used up with new data as it is added. This way, over a period of time (assuming that you are deleting stuff as you go) the database will probably reach an optimum size, after which the stuff you delete is roughly equal to the stuff you add, and no further growth takes place. Personally, I made my database huge so I could have one large space for my database and not have it fragment my drive. See our Database Page for more tips on reducing the database, archiving and backing up.
