I've asked this question before, and I've received thoughtful but
unfortunately incorrect answers. Please don't take offense, those who've
offered suggestions. I'm just noting the outcome.

I keep my Entourage database on my Dual 1 GHz G4 (mirrored doors) at home. I
also have a PowerBook G4 400 MHz, and in my office at work I have a dual
1.25 GHz (2003 "second generation" mirrored doors G4). All Macs run OS X
10.2.6, and the (correctly licensed) copies of Office are all updated except
for the newest mail server update.

I have tried several ways to transfer my calendar/mail/contacts data from
one Mac to another, including direct Finder drags of the "Main Identity"
folder while the two Macs are networked, transporting the "Main Identity"
folder from one to another on a portable FireWire drive, and (most
convenient) using the synchronization program "Synchronize! Pro X"
(currently v. 3.0.3).

No matter how I do it, after I've done it I find that retrieving mail from
my ISP's POP server on my home or work Macs (curiously, not the PowerBook)
occurs VERY slowly, and that the reason for this is that the desktop Mac
expects to find something that resides on the PowerBook's hard drive. If I'm
retrieving mail to my home desktop machine, for example, the retrieval runs
quickly if the PowerBook's hard drive is mounted on the desktop machine's
DeskTop (hope that's clear); on the other hand, if they're networked, but
the PowerBook's hard drive is NOT currently mounted, the OS ASKS to connect
to it as a server volume while I'm retrieving mail. I can press "Cancel" in
the "Connect to Server" dialog (typically four times) and then I'll be able
to retrieve several more messages before the dialog reappears, or I can
mount the PB volume, wherupon message retrieval completes quickly. If I do
the latter, nothing happens to the Main Identity database on the PB as a
result.

I THINK I've just realized what's wrong, but I don't know if I have a
solution. I suspect that Entourage recognizes that there are some saved
attachments not currently available unless BOTH the PB and local hard drives
are mounted. If THAT's the problem, I think it follows that the pointers to
the location of saved attachments are absolute, not relative; I.e., I
wouldn't solve my problem by synchronizing my

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Saved Attachments

folder contents when I synchronize the Main Identity Folders.

Have I diagnosed my problem correctly? Is my inference that the therapy I've
decided WOULD NOT work correct as well?

Thanks so much,

Jim Robertson
