I am not quite clear about the (potential) relationship of backup and archiving.

For example, I don’t often need to plunge into my email of the past.  Suppose I adopt the following strategy:

1. burn a CD backup of the MUD every 3 months.
2. delete email with date > 91 days.
3. If I need to recover something older:
   
   1. quit all Office apps
   2. rename MUD (to, say, MUD1)
   3. copy MUD from CD backup to ~/Documents
   4. open Entourage
   5. find... whatever
   6. quit Entourage
   7. discard MUD (I have it on CD)
   8. rename MUD1 to MUD
   9. open Entourage and other Office apps as needed
      

Is that a sensible strategy, or is there more to MUD than meets the eye?
