Just change the Character Set in Format menu for any message that should be Japanese. Try all the Japanese formats available (there are 4) to see which one works (e.g. Shift JIS). Or see if it looks right in Unicode UTF-8. For your replies, to be able to type in English, set the Character Set to UTF-8.
