I agree that's probably the cause - existing prefs with bad permissions or corrupt in some other way. The correct way to remove all these - and others that are invisible - is to use the Office Remover app in Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Office Remover. That's the best, most thorough method. It will _not_ touch your data. Then reinstall. This is probably all that needs doing. You could try Remo's suggestion and just remove those files to start with.
