I'd rather do it right. I don't know how "unsafe" it would end up being; I can't really foresee data loss or corruption with this model, but I do agree about reliability issues; I am also loathe to build something destined to interfere with the user, however minimized its effects. GUI scripting is fine and dandy when there's absolutely no other choice (isn't that what put Quick Keys on the map?), but it still doesn't make it anything but a poor choice for want of another. My main point in posting the suggestion was to demonstrate that the original need could be easily enough met with minimal effort on a small scale, and that the need was not invalid to begin with; both points contrary to the general response (not to mention condescension) Mark was receiving. It still makes me sad, though, that (unless I misunderstand your presentation of Dan's suggestion) doing it right requires essentially recreating an entire section of a major application with one, small additional feature that, IMO, should have been there in the first place. I'd also be willing to bet that the man hours you're about to expend for free (unless you intend to make this app commercial) would've easily been more than enough to put the required feature in the core app code. I'm not sure how useful a collaboration on this type of job would be to you, but I do builds in ASS as well, so if you want to slug off some of the tedium of creating repetitive clauses, bug testing, UI construction, or whatever (anything but pretty icon creation), to me, let me know.
