The problem -- to me! no judgments being made! -- is over quoting. There is
almost never a need for more than one level of quote, and certainly not
four! The question is, do you consider your contribution important enough to
be read? If so, put in the effort to make it readable. Why would the reader
wade through three screens full of quoted material (actual example) to find
a sentence of two of new material? Or, as Deborah pointed out, change font
sizes just to be able to make out the letters? Thank goodness Entourage has
an "Increase Font Size" button.

For all the advances that have been made in computing since the 1700s, text
is still the lingua franca. Because some companies make decisions which
result in formatted text looking very different depending on email client
and OS, if want to communicate with the least barriers between you and the
recipient, you would normally use plain text. There are certainly
exceptions, for instance Paul mentioned line wrapping. This is why I
requested several years ago that Entourage be given the option of turning
off line wrapping, as in Eudora. The query was not well received, and I do
not know if the option exists in 2004.
Julian's idea of author-based markup is beyond the scope of this list, but
it can be done easily enough with XML/XSS and -- with a little work, be done
in simple HTML with styles, using the form
<p class="Abbott">Who's on first?</p>
<p class="Costello">Exactly!</p>
Implementing it in an email client's "reply" function would, I suspect, be
nontrivial, though. :->
