Try temporarily collapsing the folder pane with the big "arrow" icon, or
View->Folders List. I routinely work that way. I used the Keyboards
preference panel (OS one) to assign a shortcut to "Folders List" so I can
toggle back and forth with a keystroke.

Rewrap paragraph does work if you first click the Edit button in the
message's toolbar, but it wraps at a pre-set width that may still break
badly in a narrow window.
