Hear, hear! I find Entourage search functions as a whole to be a great big
joke in sound user behavior. That a simple Find window cannot recall my
preferences for basic search options, that it erases a field if you switch
the value, etc, etc, etc. We won't even get into how gawdawful slow it is to
search any DB over 100MB, let alone when it approaches a GB or more.

I only wish I could drag 800 emails as fast as you -- this includes using
the 'Move' command, which is no faster, but it at least does not lock up the
GUI as it might on a botched drag'n'drop. When it comes time to create
archive folders, I groan at the ten, twenty, thirty minutes, or even more
moving three, four, five or ten thousand messages might take.

And you want to know what else really makes me mad as hell? Why is there no
'Delete this immediately' command? Nothing more fun than waiting thirty
minutes to move 10k messages to the Deleted Items folder, then wait the
exact same amount of time again to actually delete them. If this feature
exists, I can't find it, nor has anyone else I've asked. And why can't I at
least compose a new message while the move is taking place? I can understand
not being able to cue up additional moves, or retrieve new mail, but I feel
like I'm working on the original Mac OS circa 1984; one operation at time,
please.

Then we get to wait another amount of time twice or even ten times as long
to compact the DB in yet another command that makes the app totally
inaccessible is just icing on the whole thing. I have to reserve most of a
weekend come year's end when it's time to archive the prior year's stuff.

Sure, I could change the frequency that I archive things to reduce the load,
but anyone who suggests that as the real solution does not understand why
software is made: to work *for* the human, not against; software -- good
software, anyway -- must conform to my needs, not the other way around.

Usually for an app to be able to show a preview, a thumbnail icon must exist
within the file. This adds to the file size. The last thing I want is for
Entourage to go around making my received images larger than they already
are. I admit the feature would be handy, but make it an 'on-the-fly' option
via Contextual Menu to generate and display thumbnails only when requested.

Agreed. Long, long, long overdue, and oft requested. Apparently we should
not hold our breath; MS knows best. I *never* use the icon bar, neither in
Browser or in an open message (or any other window I can think of) and yet
I have to give it a substantial amount of precious real estate. What few
buttons I might want there, I am unable to place. Crazy.

My Menubar is already too crowded, myself, but I agree that it would be
superior to the Dock icon for those who hide the Dock. This should be
possible to create via third party (if it doesn't already exist).

> -More/better soundset options

YA long-bitched about feature MIA since OS X. The excuses heard here are
pure crap about it being Apple's fault. Anyone here can build an Xcode app
in five minutes to play a sound file using existing APIs; that MS left this
out is pure laziness.

For me,

-- I'd sure like to see more keyboard navigation throughout the app. The
spell checker is the worst: why can't I hit 'I' or 'Command-I' to ignore a
word? Why must I press Tab-Enter? Why doesn't Tab do what it's supposed to,
and allow you to select *any* button, not just 'Change' and 'Ignore'. Lots
more wrong with just this window.

-- I'd also just giggle with glee if I could set the outgoing mail account
in a new message via keystroke. I freakin' hate using the mouse (or any
pointing device when forced to), and yet thirty, fifty, seventy or more
times a day I have to mouse up to select a different outgoing account (I
manage over 400 email addresses, and do a lot of mail every day).

Thanks for starting this discussion; perhaps the MSBU will actually listen
this time around, and in another three to five years, we might see some of
these features (for another $349.00).

What really needs to be done is a website with user-submitted feature
suggestions needs to be publicly posted, and Entourage enthusiasts can both
vote on and discuss a requested feature.

If a feature receives enough votes, maybe, just maybe the MacBU will
allocate some development hours to the most popular requested features.

Now, I would also want to count a feature request somewhat differently from
what I see as buggy, or non-conformist behaviors, such as missing Universal
Access features, and such. These list items should be addressed by MS at
their expense, and included in a free update. Sloppy coding corrections and
laziness in making sure all existing features behave as expected should not
require the cost of an upgrade to resolve.

-- E.G., Why does the Office Notifications window behave so very, very
badly? Why can't it properly remember it's placement? Why does it bounce all
over the screen when you dismiss or snooze events? Where else have you ever
seen a window shrink and reposition from top to bottom, instead of bottom to
top? It gets even worse if you dare to display it on a monitor above your
main screen. I'd be embarrassed if I were the engineer responsible for that
particular code fart. And I don't know if it's fixed in Entourage 2004 or
not yet (I'm waiting for my VPC bundle to get it), but it sure pisses me off
that I have to pay to get it fixed, if it's fixed at all.

Lastly, I want to stress that the biggest goal with any new feature, IMHO,
is to *expand* on existing features and default behavior, leaving in the
same old functions and manners as people are used to, where the new features
do not eliminate the old. Do not radically change the way an app behaves
unless one can choose to revert to that behavior as desired.

Happy Sunday
