Just woke the computer from overnight sleep and read your post.
Launched Word, created a new document, copied the text from another
document into it, hit <Save> and, the pizza wheel spun for about six or
seven seconds.

Yep. It's been a bitch trying to dope out why this is happening.
Someone else suggested turning off Spotlight.
