I quite agree about using port 587.  I use port 587 all the time and I've
yet to have to reconfigure to get around any sort of port blocking and
hijacking.

And, since I run my own mail server and just in case some idiot ISP decides
to block or hijack 587 as well (which they shouldn't since a properly
configured mail server only accepts authenticated connections on 587), I
also have an additional port set up to accept authenticated connections.
