For example, when searching for Matthew just start typing Matthew. Yes. It does seem a bit strange that you can tab into the list and not into the search field. I am a bit confused by how your clients address messages. I was under the assumption that they were not great with the keyboard and used the mouse more. They would type a letter and then use the mouse to scroll through the list. I must be wrong as you now say they want to use the tab key.
