Sorry, Larry, I should have noted that I put <smtp.gmail.com> in the
blank for SMTP server. At the Google Mail site, under <Configuring your
email client: Entourage 2004> this is what they instruct you to use.

I am absolutely current on my Mac OS X updates.
Since first posting this problem, I decided to try and also configure
Apple's Mail to work with my Gmail account.
I went to Apple's Mail and followed the directions on Google for how to
set up Mail to work with Gmail.
The first time I set up an outgoing email in Mail, choosing my Gmail
address in Mail's Account drop-down menu, I got the same alert re the root
certificate problem.
However, in this alert window there was the triangle indicating more
info. I clicked on the triangle and there was beaucoup info the Google root
certificate. Fingers crossed, I dragged the icon of the root certificate to
my desktop. I then double clicked on that icon on the desktop. It launched
Keychain Access and asked if I wanted to add the certificate. I chose to
add it.
Result is that I can now send mail from Mail, using my Gmail account as
my From: address and I don't get the root certificate alert.
Hoping that having the new root certificate in Keychain would also solve
the problem with Entourage, I sent another email from Entourage, using my
Gmail account as my From: address...and I still get the root certificate
alert.
Crikey, this is confusing.
