I checked. Indeed, I did not have the Thawte certificate you described.
Downloaded and installed it is as directed, but when I selected it, it
lacked the green check mark and still had the red <X>.
Logged out/in and checked it and now it has the green check.
Sent mail from both Apple's Mail and Entourage, using my gmail address
as the sent from choice and both went just fine.
Many, many thanks for all your help in sorting through this problem.
