There was an issue way back when where problems occurred if too many mail accounts were being downloaded at once on a timed schedule -- at that time I split my accounts into two groups of 4-5 accounts each, with staggered download times, and that problem went away. The current freezing problem only started occurring within the past few months (again, I can't remember if it occurred after a specific upgrade or when I started on a MacBook, but others have pointed out they have the same problem with non-Intel Macs, and I think some of us are running different OS levels, as well).
