I could not find the option to set Category in MLM. I did have the category first in my rules, so I just deselected it. I haven’t gotten any mail yet, so I don’t know whether that will fix the problem.
Entourage froze. I had to shut down the computer, and then everything was gone when I restarted it. I did a search for “Microsoft User Data folder” but just got e-mails with that subject heading from the list.

Check the Mailing List Manager (MLM) under Tools. There is an option to set
Category on the first window. Personal Rules can also set category. Check
your Rules under Tools also.
You don't mention how you lost your email,but the most common reason
Entourage opens with no email is user error. Users move the Microsoft User
Data folder to another location. When this happens, Entourage will create a
new blank Identity. If you do a search for Microsoft User Data folder you
can move it back to the Documents folder where it belongs.
