Don,

Crown volume versus crown space. I think the crown volume of the crown is made
up of both occupied and empty space. To me your terminology seems backwards.
If you are looking at trunk volume, you are not subtracting out the volume of
the trunk that is hollow because it is enclosed or partially enclosed by the
outermost wood. Likewise the hollow space within the crown volume is still
part of the crown volume because it is bounded by the outermost reaches of the
crown.

I don't think my concept it has any more to do with aesthetics than any other
measure of the tree. It is a reasonable measure. You can subdivide it into
things like "crown bulk density" in your example, but that is a subdivision of
the volume measure, not a better or alternative volume measure. his is because
it does not include the entire crown, just those portions filled by leaves.

Some people have suggested that tree wood volumes be multiplied by an average
density for the wood to create a truer value of the wood present. Ok that is
fine, but I see that as a different parameter, a rating of trees by weight,
distinct from the volume measure. It does not replace volume of wood as a
measure, but is something different. The crown bulk density is a reasonable
measure, but is not the same as crown volume.
