Your large shrub with the blue berries resembles one of the cherrylaurels 
(Prunus caroliniana) or (P. laurocerasus).

Ed,

I can't tell for sure, but it might be European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), 
a non-native invasive that is becoming a serious problem in the Allegheny NF 
(see attached photos taken last fall in Elk County).

Were there many other trees in the same general area, or was it just the one 
individual? If you think it may have been Rhamnus cathartica it would probably 
be helpful to report the location of your sighting to the Marienville Ranger 
Station.

I don't know what this tree is with clusters of blue berries.  the base is a 
cluster of stems at most 3 inches in diameter, and standing perhaps 20 feet 
tall.
