Ed, Your large shrub with the blue berries resembles one of the cherrylaurels (Prunus caroliniana) or (P. laurocerasus).

Were there many other trees in the same general area, or was it just the one individual? If you think it may have been Rhamnus cathartica it would probably be helpful to report the location of your sighting to the Marienville Ranger Station.
