Beth-

You're from Chicago? Do you know a friend of mine who lives...?

Yeah, the association of Alaska and temperatures doesn't live up to the
expectations of most of those in 'the lower 48'...states that is...Alaska gets
shorted in map projections most often used to provide a more 'proper
proportion' to the contiguous US. When Alaska is 'moved', or superimposed onto
the contiguous US, Alaska's land mass extends beyond the US at it's four
corners.

Such a large land mass with extensive land/sea interface (another superlative
for Bob!) has significant variation in temperature and climatic conditions.
Juneau as you say has a land/sea interface (buffered by the many islands that
dot much of SE Alaska's coastline), and the maritime influence does
significantly influence the temperatures. Less buffered by protective islands,
Valdez, just a few hundred miles north, had 6' of snow fall in a 24 hour storm
last week. Not uncommon, one of the problems this causes is the sinking of
untended sailboats in Valdez harbor.

Inland, a more continental weather pattern is noted, with Fairbanks in the
interior receiving low's in the -30 to -50 degree range in the dead of winter,
and exceeding 100 degrees occasionally in the summer.

Once out of Southeast Alaska, much of Alaska is technically a desert, based on
effective rainfall...sublimated snow cover ('evaporates' into atmosphere)
doesn't count.

TADIA, it's said...Things Are Different In Alaska...(common bumper sticker
highlights this lack of 'normality'..."Alaska, where the odds are good
(referring to the low women to men ratio), but the goods are odd!"

Bob,
Thank you for the info. A drinking buddy of mind thought that Juneo, Alaska was
cold. I tried to tell her about the Japaness Current (aka the Gulf Stream of
the Pacific). But alas, she wouldn't believe me.

Beth,

I thought you'd never ask. I don't know the answer to that question, but here
are some temperatures from traditional cold spots and some of my favored haunts
around the U.S. (lower 48. Don's neck of the woods doesn't count.). I'm going
to confer with Ernie about the traditional cold spots and track them in earnest
starting in January.
