You are right in almost everything but the size.
Something can look sharp at a small magnification
(small viewfinder) and unsharp at a higher
magnification. Your eyes have a fixed resolution
(different for black&white=dark, and color, I think).
If something is out of focus it will build a circle
instead of (theoretically) a point. At small
maginifications the circle is too small to be
recognized as such so the image looks sharp. With
higher magnification you can see the circle and the
image looks fuzzy.
Nevertheless, I agree that the effect of DOF can be
easily seen in the viewfinder. For beginners it is not
always that obvious, though. It seems like the first
have to look at an extrem situation to become aware of
DOF in any situation. A good example is when focus on
a part of a fence while almost standing parallel to
it. Now when you stop down from f1.4 to f8 (if the
viewfinder gets too dark beginners again have problems
to see the effect) it should be easy to see the
effect. If it still does not work then maybe there
really is something wrong with the camera.
If something is wrong with the camera it could be that
the blades somehow got stock at a certain aparture.
You can easily check that. Look trough your 50/1.4 and
you should not see the blades. If you see them then
they did get stuck. If you want to test it more look
through the lens, press the DOF preview button and
change the apartures through the whole range. You
should be able to see how the blades close down.
