Dear Paul

I an see that your message has made a lot of discussion and confusion here.

You are absolutely right about DOF at full opening; if you shoot at wide
open the DOF preview will not change anything in the viewfinder. When
viewing the picture through viewfinder you should ( theoretically ) see what
you will get in focus. However the ground glass in SLRs may not show things
exactly as they are. It does its job at small apertures, and even then it
requires some practice (which I have not yet mastered) to see the real depth
of field, but at full opening it is not that accurate. Heck, I can't even
find the DOF when closed down, the damn view gets too dark.
I believe that the original purpose of the ground glass is to approximate
the correct focus.

Personally I would/could never trust the viewfinder for DOF, but get a good
chart of DOF for fifferent focal lengths.
