Greg - what you are missing is my original thought - the DOF should
only INCREASE the dof that you see as it is shutting down the
aperture, at least that's how I understand it.

Again, when using a lens like the 50/1.4 if you shoot a pic at 1.4 you
will get someone's nose in focus but their ears will start to blur and
couple of feet behind them is completely out of focus. 

This is NOT what I see when looking through my 10s with 1.4/50
attached.  The DOF preview button should be irrelevant as it should
only increase DOF if I'm not off my rocker here.
