The Canon Marketing Department did a splendid job of fooling
people....everyone reads 'costs less', while all they said is 'costs
less to manufacturer'....ohhhhh so subtle difference....:))
All this apart from the fact that there is no ordinary 400/4.0 to
compare to in price....only that darn prototype (the one on the
Photokina didn't even have a proper metal ID-tag).
Last report I heard was that the 400/4.0 would be introduced in the
first half of 2001, but at a premium, compared to existing high end
IS teles (IOW, when using lens diameter as an index, it would be
closer to a 500/4.0 or even 400/2.8 IS than a 300/2.8 IS....pricing
it close to the 300/2.8 IS would mean no premium given its lens
diameter or relative-aperture, as the same could be obtained with a
300/2.8 + 1.4x).
End of WJ's Marketing Class, you may go now....;))
