Yesterday I ordered a 17-35HSM from Sigma at NY-Camera, it costs
1398.- DM, which is ~600.- USD.

I compared both the 20-35USM and the 17-35HSM on a -1V and I think
that the USM is as fast as the HSM from Sigma. Unlike the 2.8/70-
200HSM, with the 17-35HSM you cant manually focus while AF is
switched on.

Advantage of the Sigma: lenshood and lens pouch included.
Disadvantage: closest focusing distance of only 50cm. The 20/2.8USM
is far better with 25cm. But hey, a lot of pros use the 2.8/17-35USM
and this lens focuses up to 42cm, so I believe that a few cm are not
that important.

I agree with you, this is a little bit strange. But I got used to it
very fast.

I found a Sigma 3.5-4.5/18-35 lens at a German mail-order
(www.internet-foto.de) at a good price (I think it was ~800.- DM,
which is ~250.- USD). But I do not know sure if they sell to foreign
countries and I dont know about the quality of the lens. Anybody on
the list who knows more about this lens?

Bye,

Marco
