550EX for about 150 more, I am thinking that I'll just go ahead and get that
to use as my master.

I use two 550's as slaves, triggered by the ST-E2.
Not to dissuade you from your choice but you might wish to consider that the 550
mounted on the hot shoe is bit ungainly. It is a large unit compared to other
on-camera flashes I've used. This is an especial concern if you attempt to use a
vertical or "portrait" composition. The 550 is a real clumsy beast when it's
hanging off the hot shoe horizontally.
Nonetheless, I appreciate your reasoning that, for not too much extra money, you
get additional flash capability by buying another 550 rather than the ST-E2.
