| The 550EX can master without "flashing" (Master-Slave-Off switch set to
| "Off"). However, the 550EX does command the slaves with visible light,
| whereas the ST-E2 uses near-IR. The communication burst is brief and
| will not contribute to flash exposure. See my web

Two points to clarify:
The 550EX Master-Slave-Off switch will need to be set to "Master"
in order to control remote units. There is a mode setting by means of
a button on the back of the 550EX, indicated in the LCD panel, which
disables the exposure flash burst from the master 550EX.
The reason the (550EX Master) communication burst does not
contribute to the exposure is not that it is brief but rather that it takes
place before the exposure.
