Just wanted to jump in here and endorse the above comment.  Some of you may
remember the theatrics I went through a few years ago when I got my
380EX...I could NOT detect the preflash and wanted to be sure it was firing.
After several days of firing the flash at myself in a dark closet, I finally
either a) became convinced it worked; b) saw so much flashing before my eyes
I couldn't tell a preflash from a sunset, or; c) gave up and took your word
for it.
