Hi Julian,
like most EOS-Camers, the 550EX has Custom-Functions too.
CF-3 = 0 : ETTL
CF-3 = 1 : TTL
I have no problem to switch to TTL-Mode with my EOS3 (type-A-Body) using Flash-CF3 = 1.
To change the CF settings on the Flash, you have to press the illumination-button on
the EX for at least 2 sec., then press SEL/SET to choose F3, then + to set CF3 to 1.
Now you have to press the illumination-button again to end the procedure.
