Julian,
If you buy the Hot Shoe Adapter 3 ($59.95), you should be able to place a
380EX or 420EX in the top and just have plain old TTL. The adapter is
really the starting point in a distributor system for controlling multiple
flash units and still having TTL. It goes in the camera's hot shoe, and has
a hot shoe connector on top. It also has a plug in for one of the TTL
connecting cords which can go directly to a off-camera shoe adapter or to a
TTL distributor and more cords and adpaters. A side effect of using this
adapter is that it puts your flash in TTL mode (vs E-TTL). Kind of an
expensive and less convienient way to set up a multi-flash system in the
long run (not to mention all those cords, and a length restriction on total
cord length). It also seems an expensive way to go to just get your flash
to go into TTL (for the adapter alone). Why not buy a non-canon TTL flash
if you have to replace your old flash anyway, and don't want E-TTL. By the
way, I have a 380EX and while I thought I would regret not having manual
control of the flash, I have not missed it yet and have enjoyed the second
curtain sync and focal plane mode (high speed sync), and haven't had any
problems with E-TTL.

Cheers, JD
