Problem is, to get the same quality as the 400/2.8 at 5.6, you'll need to
step it down to f11 or so on the 400/5.6; AND you don't have the f2.8-5.6 if
you really need it.

I don't own this lens but have borrowed one before and I think f5.6 is a bit
pessimistic. At f2.8 the lens is already very sharp and at f4 incredibly
sharp if your techinque is right.
