Isn't the 430 an "EZ" flash, rather than an "EX", and therefore not capable of E-TTL?
As someone else mentioned, using M mode, setting the shutter to 1/60 and the aperture
to f8, and just firing away, is almost guaranteed to give you properly exposed
pictures. Once you get tired of the "deer in the headlights" look, then you can
start experimenting with slow sync and flash modifiers.
