Actually I tested the af pattern of both of these
flashes a couple of weeks ago, and the af illuminator
pattern covers all 7 af points of the EOS 30 (Elan
7e).
The 420EX has a cross pattern of (from memory) 3
vertical and 3 horizontal lines (about what you'd
expect) while the 550EX has an "area" pattern with
lots of horizontal lines and a few vertical ones too.
Using either one I could get the EOS 30 to focus on a
blank white wall in darkness using the 6th/7th top and
botton af points. So from what I could see the 550EX
has all the bases covered with the EOS 30's af points.
