Keep in mind what you're actually measuring. When you ain the ball at the
sun, you're basically finding out what the brightest part of the subject
will be. If you were to aim the ball directly opposite the sun, you'd be
determining the darkest part of the subject (with exceptions). Aiming the
ball at the camera will provide an average, and probably give a pretty good
exposure. The ratio of highlight to shadow on the ball will closely
approximate that on a human face (that's why a ball is used; some incident
meters also provide a flat disc for measuring lighting ratios).
