I think this is not very astonishing. The sharpening
filter probably did the trick here. It does enhence
edges etc. by increasing the gradient which makes it
appear sharper. Of course one cannot overdue it and it
cannot increase the pixel count. I wonder how it would
have turned out if you had scanned the image from your
Mamiya, do an optimal digital processing, and then
print it? I guess at 8x12 the difference starts
showing up. Just my guess. Anyway, your example shows
quite well that for a limited enlargment you can get
very good pictures fast and at a relative low cost.
