I purchased the 100mm USM about a month ago and I have been impressed with
the results. Very quiet, fast and very sharp. As for the UV filter. I
have been into photography for 30+ years and the only time that I use a UV
filter is when I am in rain, wind, dust, at the beach or similar
conditions. I really don't like to use one during those shooting
conditions but it does provide an additional level of protection. During
the remaining 99% of the time I prefer to keep my lens spotlessly clean with
no additional glass between the film and the subject.
