Good advice, and such a basic part of photography I wonder why Canon
see lens hoods as mere "extras".

I started out (duff advise from dealers) with protect filters on all
my lenses.  Now I only use them when circumstances dictate:  sea
spray, extreme dust etc.  They *do* degrade the image and undo some of
the benefits of paying for good lenses in the first place.   The
reality:  there are a few circumstances where fitting one might
protect the front element.  I will live with that.  I'm more likely to
lose the whole lens to damage anyway.

Lens hoods:  use em.
