The first IS lenses did not have a tripod sensing mode like the new
super-tele's. With the 28-135, 100-400, and several others, you must turn
off the IS when mounted on a tripod or precessing may occur (movement of the
internal lens elements). The newer super-teles can sense when they are
mounted on a tripod and make corrections for tripod vibrations. Note: This
is from what I've read, I don't have the bucks for one of these beauties. I
do have the 28-135 and 100-400 however.
