Don't know which camera you have, but here's how I do it on my
EOS30/Elan 7.

1) Set C.Fn.2 to <1> - this causes film rewind to leave the leader out
of the canister. You'll need it to reload later.

2) Hit the mid-roll rewind button on the back of the camera.

3) Remove film and LABEL with how many frames you shot.

Then, when you re-insert the film later, put the lens on manual focus,
(otherwise the shutter won't fire without focus) stop down, leave the
lens cap on and fire the shutter until your previous frame number
comes up. Resume shooting!
