  Reasonably far, but on my Elan/100 anyway, no. You can't operate the 
camera from behind unless you put a mirror or white card or something 
in the front to reflect the IR signal.

  One thing that might be an issue (on my Elan/100 at least - I don't 
know about the II/50 or 7/30) is that the remote sensor times out 
after a few minutes. So if you're in remote mode you have to take 
your photo within that timeframe. If your passing bird comes by 
later, you're out of luck.

  I wouldn't think it'd be that difficult to open up the RC-1 and 
solder a few wires to it to build a custom electrical switch for it. 
I've opened up an RC-1 to extend the IR (to kludge up a cable 
release, since the Elan/100 lacks a cable release socket).
